Movie review - into the abyss (documentary 2011)
SO im sitting here at work.. bored but answering the phones the usual.. and trying to get myself motivated to write my last essay for my apocalypse class! ughh... and to think this semester was nearly finished.. well its not! and everyday it reminds me ..But anyways last night i went to this theater and saw "Into the Abyss" a documentary on lethal injection, and the criminals life in prison before lethal injection and the days up to it... it also focused on the family who was effected by the criminal (murderer) and how they felt about lethal injection. It was an excellent film that made you think about life, death and who deserves to take a life. Before watching this movie I was totally for lethal injection.. thinking that if someone dare take the life of another human in cold blood.. then they deserve to die themselves, after watching this documentary and all the lives that were hurt, i realized that the death penalty solves nothing.. it cannot return the lives of the ones lost..or even make up for the holes left in those loved ones hearts. it only causes more hurt..how? you make ask.. to the other victims.. the family members of the criminals and convicted.. who will lose their brother, son, daughter, mother, or father, even if what they had done was evil. I feel people are so taken with grief the first thing they think that will take away the pain is watching the person who killed, murdered, raped your loved one suffer and die, but in reality this is not solving anything. it is only a temporary fix. the pain comes back and you still mourn those you have lost. Instead why not give them life in prison, where they can think about what they did, suffer there, and maybe even ask for forgiveness, and have the chance to even ask for forgiveness from the families that they have caused so much pain. I think life in prison, in many ways is better for these people to change their lives, grow with their faith, and maybe one day be forgiven by those they have hurt. In the documentary the convicted(Michael Perry) is now 28.. he has been incarcerated for 10 years and his life is to end in 8 days. The documentary goes to show how he was only 18 when he committed these horrific crimes, and that is NO excuse.. but due to his upbringing (parents in and out of jail, homeless, broke, wrong crowd) maybe the death penalty is wrong for him.. In the end he dies by lethal injection while the sister of two of the victims watches.. he dies and only one tear comes out of his eye. The documentary goes to show his accomplice who received a less harsh charge with a life sentence.. instead of lethal injection, how their lives are affected and how he deals with what they have done. It is an amazing documentary and i would recommend it to anyone who vacillates between whether lethal injection should continue or end (if it is necessary and right). Totally should go see it,if possible!
